Dance Review: Four Go Wild in Wellies ****

Joy Watters reviews a production of 'sheer delight'.

Indepen-dance 4, Scotland’s inclusive professional dance company, has created thirty minutes of sheer delight with its spring touring show. Made for three to five- year-olds, a wee one at the front of the audience commented `it’s magic’ within minutes of the lights going up. He was spot on in his judgement.

The Glasgow-based dance company offers disabled and non-disabled people the chance to enjoy and fulfill their potential through dance. Four Go Wild in Wellies was created with the dancers by director Anna Newell and choreographer Stevie Prickett. Composer David Goodall’s lovely music perfectly captures the mood, all set amidst Brian Hartley’s colourful autumnal design.

The foul weather meant the show was staged in the rehearsal room of Dundee Rep rather than outside as planned, but it brought a warm, colourful interlude with its wordless whimsical look at four young friends mucking about in the autumn leaves but all the while looking out for each other with a helping hand.

The talented performers—Hayley Earlam, Adam Sloan, Emma Smith and Neil Price—sport jolly bobble hats, waterproof coats and wellingtons. At first, four tents sit side-by-side, apparently with a life of their own, but then the performers emerge from them like chicks from their eggs.

They dance out their story hilariously and touchingly, much to the delight of the young audience—some transfixed by it all, others rolling about in mirth. It was fun for the oldies too. Four Wellies illustrates the power of dance and how it can entertainingly celebrate what childhood friendship means.

Four Go Wild in Wellies continues its tour to Eden Court, Inverness (15 and 16 April), Macphail Centre, Ullapool (17 April), Gairloch Community Hall (April 18), Beacon Arts Centre, Greenock (20 April) and Birnam Arts (22 April).
