Festival Review: Chapshtick ***

Ashling Findlay-Carroll reviews a hit-or-miss production.

A series of short sketches that loosely centre around the idea of being a man, which provoked a smile but didn't have me rolling around the floor with laughter.

There is a playfulness between the two performers, which got the audience on board, and some nice moments of physical comedy, but the show itself seems a little too scrappy—even for clowns. Audiences are made to wait a while for the payoff to jokes, and it’s a little hit-or-miss whether they land. The times when they commit to the world they've created are dynamic, but unfortunately this isn't sustained throughout.

It’s not a bad way to spend an hour, but just short of laugh-out-loud comedy.

Chapshtick performs at New Town Theatre at 1610 until August 27 (not August 15).
