Festival Review: Late Night Lip Service ****

Ashling Findlay-Carroll reviews a 'raunchy' cabaret that hits all the right buttons.

This is a cabaret that is bound to get you hot under the collar! Hosted by the glamourous Gingzilla, a seven-foot drag queen with a glorious ginger beard and a voice that can reach notes (in both directions) most of us can only dream of.

There is such an array of acts on offer that you’re bound to find something that tickles your fancy. From feather clad Drag King Louis Cyfer’s crowd pleasing rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody, complete with air guitar from an unsuspecting audience member who well and truly got into the spirit of the evening, to the bold Betty Grumble who’s provocative act pushes boundaries, one thing unites the acts as they strut amongst the audience: they are fearless and exude the kind of attitude that makes us sit up and take notice.

Throughout the evening, Gingzilla takes control and keeps things (and us) moving, as audience members are challenged to ‘Lip Sync for Their Life’ and strut their stuff in the aisles. Each time she appears it is with a more extravagant outfit, complete with wig and accessories, and she expertly whips the audience into a frenzy as they welcome acts.

The line-up changes nightly, and it’s not one for the feint hearted, but this raunchy late night cabaret will have you singing, clapping, screaming and dancing along in no time.

Gilded Balloon at Rose Theatre. Run complete.
