Festival Review: Meow Meow's Little Mermaid *****

Ashling Findlay-Carroll reviews a production headlined with a phenomenal performer 'who has poise, charisma and stamina by the bucket load'.

She takes to the stage with a bang, surrounded by thunder and flashes of light, and there begins the rollercoaster that is Meow Meow's Little Mermaid. She informs us that this is a show about happiness. Well, it certainly put a smile on my face!

Endearingly self-deprecating with a phenomenal voice, she guides us through her search for love, loosely framed by the Hans Christian Anderson tale which serves to gently highlight the trials, tribulations and ultimately the sacrifices that a woman makes on this journey. A ball of endless energy, she performs number after number, with costume changes and aerial work, all without appearing even remotely out of breath. She seamlessly transitions from hysterically funny chat and audience interaction to heart-wrenching song to crowd, surfing and everywhere in between!

Accompanied by a 5-piece band, who were on point throughout the night, they follow demands and underscore the action with a slick professionalism that establishes that this is a cabaret with real class.

What is evident from the get go is that here is a performer who has poise, charisma and stamina by the bucket load. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Meow Meow, and as for her quest to find love, she certainly finds it in the audience.

Meow Meow’s Little Mermaid performs at The Hub until August 27th (no performances on Tuesdays).
