Festival Review: Red Bastard--Lie with Me ****

Ashling Findlay-Carroll reviews a performance that's 'deliciously rude and playfully taboo'.

There is no denying that Eric Davis is a Master Buffon, and his latest show Red Bastard: Lie with Me demonstrates this with finesse. Hilariously shocking yet founded in real honesty and vulnerability that draws us in and drags us all too willingly into his dark world, Davis makes us question our own—and societies—moral reasoning, and before we know it audience members are admitting secrets and debating "what are the rules of love?"

It is these rules that form the central theme of the hour we spend in his company, and in true Bouffon style he picks apart each and every one of them with audience participation which is both terrifying and intoxicating. He switches between addressing us as Eric and his demonic alter ego, letting us into intimate details before turning them, and us, on our heads and leaving us reeling.

Deliciously rude and playfully taboo, this is a masterclass in Bouffon. Go along if you dare!

Red Bastard: Lie with Me is in Pleasance Two at the Pleasance Courtyard, 9:30pm, 2nd Aug 2017 - 27th Aug 2017.
