Festival Review: Trygve vs a Baby ****

Ashling Findlay-Carroll reviews a 'downright silly and delightfully charming' production.

If there’s one way to get an audience full of adults cooing and giggling within seconds of entering the theatre, it’s putting a baby on the stage. Playing alongside his father, thirteen-month old Phineas well and truly steals the limelight and he (and by association, Trygve) have us on side from the get go.

Trygve vs a Baby has all the playfulness and joy that we are accustomed to in Wakenshaw’s work, but with the added magic that only comes from watching someone discover the world around them for the first time. The relationship is lovely to watch, as our tiny hero unwittingly defeats his Dad in various guises, turning to us to clap once his victory has been sealed.

True to form, Wakenshaw is a master of physical comedy and, despite being somewhat upstaged by his offspring, he still delivers, morphing his body in front of our eyes into vampires, spiders, fish and more. His attention to detail is superb, and he tells his visual story hilariously throughout and has the audience eating out of the palm of his hand.

Downright silly and delightfully charming, the duo keep us chuckling for the full sixty minutes, and as you say goodbye to Trygve and Phineas at the door you are sure to have a smile on your face.

Assembly Roxy, 15:00pm, Runs til 27th August (not Mondays).
