Rom Bands to Verse: Autumn at The Arches

Missy Lorelei picks her top gigs coming this autumn at the iconic venue.

Hard though it may be to believe, The Arches turns 21 this year! Its continued programme of gigs, club nights and theatre is as eclectic as ever. Here is what is coming up for discerning music lovers over autumn.

Grimes--August 29th

Rising young Canadian musician Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, is avant-pop with a pinch of electro, 808 and experimental elfin vocal tics. Many music pundits have already cited her second album Visions as the album of the year. Expect a kinetic, visually arresting and eccentric performance.

John Cooper Clarke--October 13th

Half punk poet, half pipe cleaner, The Bard of Salford is a true icon. He started off opening for Joy Division, confused children in Sugar Puffs commercials and yet is now part of the school curriculum! His caustic verse continues to confound and delight a new generation, including Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner. Experience his timeless invective live.

Beach House--October 29th

Baltimore duo Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally's ethereal pop is gathering momentum. Their latest album Bloom continues to expand their chiming epic sound, as heard on hit album Teen Dream, underpinned by Legrand's gorgeous husky vocals.

Supersilent--November 15th

Arve Henriksen's Norwegian improv outfit Supersilent formed in 1997, constantly shifting in scope and sound, merging jazz, electronic, ambient and rock influences. More recently they have moved towards an acoustic/rock based sound but still continue to defy easy genre. This show sees them team up with none other than Led Zeppelin multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones.

Swans--November 16th

Arches and Cry Parrot join forces to bring you the legendary Swans. The US noiseniks may have toned down their sound since their inception in the late 70s, but it won't be a night of twee, woolly jumper folk! Michael Gira's recent solo gigs were an acoustic pummelling-now he's back with the full band. Uncompromising, uncomfortable and always confrontational.
