Theatre Review: Funny Girl *****

Ashling Findlay-Carroll reviews a must-see production.

Sheridan Smith returns to Funny Girl with a bang for the UK tour, and you can understand why this show has been such a success during its West End run.

The performances from the entire cast are slick, with particular stand outs from Rachel Izen as Mrs Bryce and Joshua Lay as the ‘oh so likeable’ Eddie Ryan. The choreography by Lynne Paige is captivating, and the ensemble carry the show with energy and commitment, sweeping the audience along with the whirlwind that is Fanny Bryce.

The set is relatively simple but effective with most of the changes being done by the cast, who bring on small additions to build the various locations, and the use of asymmetrical lines throughout reflect the unconventional beauty of the protagonist. The iconic dressing room table and mirror is the only thing needed to transform the space back to the dressing room where the play begins and ends.

On this occasion the role of Nick was played by Darius Campbell, whose performance is far removed from his Pop Idol days, and he was charm personified and held the stage well throughout.

The star of the show is undoubtedly Sheridan Smith, who simply sparkles from beginning to end, her powerful performance drawing to a close with a moment that gives you shivers.

Get along to see it if you can!

Funny Girl is at the Edinburgh Playhouse until April 22 before continuing its UK tour.
