Theatre Review: Portraits in Motion ****

Michael Cox reviews a unique experience.

Sometimes it’s simplicity that’s best. Artist Volker Gerling presents a series of cinematic flipbooks he’s made over the last few decades.

And that’s it.

But Portraits in Motion is so much more. Throughout the hour, we not only get to learn about Gerling and his process but also about each of his subjects. This in itself is fascinating, but what’s truly wonderful is seeing these lovely works of art projected up onto a screen. The effect is actually mesmerising: watching 12-second snippets of time pass, one stares at the subjects like a hawk, looking for the slightest of movements. An art form that could cynically be thought of as creating old-fashioned memes becomes something else, something unique, beautiful and moving.

Portraits in Motion is at Summerhall at 4.15pm until August 25th.
