Set in the 1960s, three sisters form girl group and soon become local sensations with major label interest, but fame becomes a challenge as the close-knit family begins to fall apart.
Sparkle’s drama is predestined and overripe, with backstage homilies so loud and clear they could be sold as ringtones. But if you are in the mood for unrestrained, sudsy melodrama then you might as well lather up here.
Trite and predictable but the musical numbers have heart and there is a poignancy in seeing Houston one last time.
Sparkle isn’t Dreamgirls – but fans of schmaltzy showbiz fairytales should enjoy it.
Some sparkle and plenty of motion.
