Arbitrage (15)

Arbitrage (15)

Drama, Thriller

A troubled hedge fund magnate desperate to complete the sale of his trading empire makes an error that forces him to turn to an unlikely person for help.

The critical consensus

It’s the kind of role that fits Gere perfectly these days, his somewhat blank face gradually hardening to the audience as we become increasingly aware of the moral void under the surface.

***(*)(*)Paul Gallagher, The List, 13/02/2013

This may be the role that Gere has been suited for since he first threw on the Armani for American Gigolo. In the past, his inscrutable style has been frustrating, but it’s a good fit for a wheeler-dealer trying to stay three moves ahead of everyone.

****(*)Siobhan Synnot, The Scotsman, 24/02/2013

Fraudulent movie about fraud.

**(*)(*)(*)Chris Tookey, Daily Mail, 01/03/2013

Gere is good at letting us see the cracks beginning to emerge in this hitherto unflappable man’s demeanour.

***(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 28/02/2013

A tightly-wound character thriller, Arbitrage keeps the tension simmering while showcasing a career best from Richard Gere. You don’t need a degree in economics to watch.

****(*)Stephen Carty, Flix Capacitor, 21/02/2013

Like last year's Margin Call, this is a stonkingly effective thriller that demystifies Wall Street without diminishing its complexity. Good to see Gere back on form, too.

****(*)David Hughes, Empire Online, 28/02/2013

The plot is taut, Gere is great and Jarecki a force to be reckoned with.

****(*)Amber Wilkinson, Eye for Film, 27/02/2013

A sleek and suspenseful thriller set in the glittering world of high finance, dripping with flavour and topped with a performance from Richard Gere of richest molten cheddar.

****(*)Robbie Collin, The Telegraph, 28/02/2013

There is a silky, glossy texture to Nicholas Jarecki’s film, the warm patina of wealth, which contrasts nicely with the panicky sense of crumbling securities.

****(*)Jenny McCartney, The Telegraph, 01/03/2013

The film is depending on a star performance to see it through, which is another risk: a lightweight who thinks he's a heavyweight, Gere is charming in a blank way, but I'm not sure he has the complexity to project much else beyond lordly irritation.

**(*)(*)(*)Anthony Quinn, The Independent, 28/02/2013

A satisfying, grown-up drama, if not the definitive film about the financial crisis.

****(*)Henry Fitzherbert, Daily Express, 28/02/2013

An old-fashioned treat.

****(*)David Cox, The Guardian, 28/02/2013

Another workmanlike indie movie which shakes a fist at New York's plutocrats.

***(*)(*)Nicholas Barber, The Independent on Sunday, 03/03/2013

Richard Gere, a much undervalued actor, best employed when discovering sympathetic aspects of weak or dislikable people, gives one of his best performances.

Philip French, The Observer, 03/03/2013
