The critical consensus

Spiritually, it's closer to a mid-range crowd-pleaser such as City Slickers than Blazing Saddles, too enamoured of genre convention to reach for the comic dynamite.

The plot doesn't make sense but through sheer force of attrition, some of the gags do raise a chuckle – and the film is as handsomely shot as any genuine Western.

Verdict: A million more reasons to miss this.

A Million Jokes Die In The West. Well, not a million. Most of them. Most of the jokes die in the West.

**(*)(*)(*)Simon Crook, Empire Online, 30/05/2014

A Million Ways To Die is very hit and miss, wallowing in smut as it serves up fetid pools of toilet humour, salty language and more sheep jokes then you would ever care to know.

It's essentially Blazing Saddles, only the fart jokes aren't quite as fresh.

*(*)(*)(*)(*)Jonathan Romney, The Observer, 01/06/2014

Seth MacFarlane comes out from behind the teddy bear to take centre stage in this misjudged effort.
