At the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver has the opportunity to rebuild his team when he trades for the number one pick. He must decide what he's willing to sacrifice on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with NFL dreams.
Draft Day ends up as the trashy, glitzy cousin to the Oscar-nominated Moneyball, minus the smart statistical hook.
Director Ivan Reitman jazzes the talky proceedings up with split screens and transitions galore, but it’s still just a minor-league Moneyball.
Costner pulls this one through. His speaker-phone acting is second-to-none.
Kevin Costner’s personal issues are left on the bench as everyone gets worked up about NFL transfer windows.
Formulaic but surprisingly watchable.
It’s unlikely to strike a chord with UK audiences, but Costner has always been king of the (it’s-not-really-about) sports movie, and after the crass Euro-stodge of 3 Days to Kill it’s good to see him back on home turf.
Directed by Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) it’s not the most cinematic story, with much of the action confined to back rooms and telephone calls but anchored around a solid turn from Costner it’s an appealing drama for sports fans.
