Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (PG)

Comedy, Family

Alexander's day begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by more calamities. Though he finds little sympathy from his family and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him, his mom, dad, brother, and sister all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

The critical consensus

Contains a lot of slapstick and a kangaroo.

***(*)(*)Siobhan Synnot, The Scotsman, 05/10/2014

This is a highly entertaining family comedy, with the commendably short runtime ensuring it doesn't wear out its welcome.

****(*)Matthew Turner, The List, 06/10/2014

This fun film about a 12-year-olds travails manages to present pre-teen ambiguity in a way seldom seem at the cinema.

Disney’s answer to Diary of a Wimpy Kid has plenty of vomit gags, but is not quite winning enough.

**(*)(*)(*)Mike McCahill, The Guardian, 10/10/2014

Decidedly mediocre yet hard to hate.

**(*)(*)(*)Adam Woodward, Little White Lies, 23/10/2014

Slapstick comedy blends with heartfelt life lessons in a perfectly pleasant Disney movie.

***(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 23/10/2014

The set-up is very similar to that of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies – and shares all their wit and brio.

****(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 24/10/2014

There are slapstick chuckles in this adaptation of Judith Viorst’s popular children’s story, but little spark.
