Follow the lives of Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) - three flatmates who are just trying to get by and overcome life's obstacles-like being immortal vampires who must feast on human blood.
A toothless, one-note joke, this just about sustains its 80-minute running time.
You have the makings of a bloody good treat.
Here it is at long last: a truly great vampire comedy. And also the funniest horror film to come out of New Zealand since Braindead.
The film does repeat itself and seems a little stretched at feature length – but there is plenty of hilarity along the way.
The rigour with which their hideous and crepuscular world is imagined, combined with the continuous flow of top-quality gags, makes this a treat from first to last.
Obvious, schoolboy humour amounts to very little indeed.
Sharp as fangs, warm as fresh blood, this could be the funniest movie of the year. New Zealand’s answer to Edgar Wright.
Though slight of plot, this is a comedy rich in character and full of the kind of throwaway gags that become funnier with repeated viewing.
Verdict: Comedy with bite.
While individual gags and cineliterate nods (from Nosferatu to Blade) may have comical bite, there’s not enough meat to sink its feature-length fangs into.
