When Harvey (Harry Macqueen) hears that his old friend Lola (Lori Campbell) is returning home after years abroad he arranges to take her away for the weekend to the sea-side cottage where they spent so much of their youth. What follows is a touching and beautiful story of a old friendship rekindled within a new context. Hinterland is a poetic journey of self-discovery and heartbreak in contemporary Britain, a very original and visually stunning road-trip film.

The critical consensus

Some winning performances but the astonishingly low budget and shaky script does make for distracting viewing at times.

While it’s distinctly possible that you’ll want to slap Harvey and Lola (especially when Lola gets her guitar out and starts crooning songs about dancing through dreams), it’s also very clear that Macqueen has drive, sincerity and talent, and that this small-scale but elegant work could serve as an effective calling card for a significant future career.

Harry Macqueen wrote, directed and stars in this tender but insubstantial drama about two childhood friends holidaying together.
