Monsters: Dark Continent (15)

Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Ten years on from the events of Monsters, and the 'Infected Zones' have now spread worldwide. In the Middle East a new insurgency has begun. At the same time there has also been a proliferation of Monsters in that region. The Army decide to draft in more numbers to help deal with this insurgency.

The critical consensus

An unconventional sequel to an unconventional film, this works as a standalone picture with its own distinctive take on alien invasion but also expands what now seem like a franchise with potential to deliver more and varied snapshots of human behaviour in extreme circumstances.

****(*)Kim Newman, Empire Online, 27/04/2015

This self-important war movie about macho men with CGI monsters somewhere on the horizon is one of the worst sequels of the decade.

*(*)(*)(*)(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 30/04/2015

Random plotting and jarring changes in tone.

**(*)(*)(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 01/05/2015

It is a glum, ear-splitting rehash of familiar elements from The Hurt Locker and Saving Private Ryan with the slippery aliens as a side dish rather than a great threat.

**(*)(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 01/05/2015

Monsters: Dark Continent feels like someone had an unproduced script for a war movie lying around and decided to stick aliens in the background to milk the dubious franchise potential of an innovative indie hit.

**(*)(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 02/05/2015

The production values are impressive but the story is slow and there is little reason to care.

**(*)(*)(*)Henry Fitzherbert, Sunday Express, 03/05/2015

Director Tom Green disappoints with this overblown follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ pioneering Monsters.
