Tribe, The (18)

Crime, Drama

A deaf teenager struggles to fit into the boarding school system.

The critical consensus

The Tribe is a tough, confrontational watch but, while its juvenile delinquents do terrible things, Slaboshpytskiy manages to generate considerable sympathy for their situation.

****(*)Katherine McLaughlin, The List, 11/05/2015

Original, engrossing and extremely confrontational, The Tribe treads the dark path between misery porn and masterpiece.

****(*)Matt Glasby, Total Film, 11/05/2015

Squeaking shoes and grunts of anger are the only soundtrack to this brutal and supremely strange Ukrainian film about a school for the deaf falling into anarchy.

****(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 14/05/2015

Maybe not quite ‘enjoyment’, but definitely rapt engagement.

****(*)Anton Bitel, Little White Lies, 15/05/2015

Set in a school for deaf children, this film without speech features a superb non-professional cast, but in places is too cruel to watch.
