Could be an oblique prequel to Downfall.
A respectable but slightly underwhelming production.
A gripping interrogation of a close call for Hitler.
Oliver Hirschbiegel delivers a confident account of the life of Georg Elser, who made a failed attempt to bomb Adolf Hitler in 1939.
No great shakes, but a decent reputation-saver from Hirschbiegel.
Though well acted, the latter aspect of the film sadly isn’t as compellingly rendered as the battle of wills that erupts between Elser and his Nazi interrogators.
The picture does not reach its full dramatic potential, though, despite being handsomely mounted and well acted.
