Margherita, a director in the middle of an existential crisis, has to deal with the inevitable and still unacceptable loss of her mother.
Among the excellent principals, top-billed Turturro enlivens things wonderfully, but the real star, Buy, is magnificent.
Absorbing melodrama from Nanni Moretti, featuring a scene-stealing John Turturro.
Director Nanni Moretti has got his mojo back in this sad, funny and satisfying movie about a film director who carries on working while her mother is dying.
Moretti, who also co-stars as Margherita’s more together older brother, is good when he’s sending up the self-importance of the film industry, but as he lurches into sincere mode to show how life and art feed into each other, things get a little treacly.
Moretti is an old reliable, but he needs to be more than that.
A film-maker has to cope with her dying mother and a pompous American star in this tragicomic triumph by Nanni Moretti.
Moving and funny in its own understated way.
