Pan (PG)

Pan (PG)

Adventure, Family, Fantasy

12-year-old orphan Peter is spirited away to the magical world of Neverland, where he finds both fun and danger, and ultimately discovers his destiny -- to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan.

The critical consensus

Amid all the camp craziness of Wright's vision, with Jackman twirling his moustache as if his life depends on it, Miller is the one truly watchable element of the film. The rest could have done with drastic pruning.

A starry cast, including Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara and Cara Delevingne, can’t save Joe Wright’s dull, dreadful, unasked for prequel to JM Barrie’s children’s classic.

*(*)(*)(*)(*)Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian, 12/10/2015

Stripping J.M. Barrie’s story of its most magical elements without replacing them with anything substantial, it’s hard to imagine anyone really caring about Pan.

**(*)(*)(*)Matt Maytum, Total Film, 23/10/2015

Joe Wright’s fantastically dull origin-myth reboot of the Peter Pan story resembles nothing so much as a John Lewis Christmas TV ad.

*(*)(*)(*)(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 15/10/2015

Joe Wright stages some very colourful set-pieces, but the film-making never takes wing.

**(*)(*)(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 15/10/2015

The special effects are a throwback to the 1980s, the dialogue makes you wince and the whole film spectacularly misses the mark.

**(*)(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 16/10/2015

Pan is fast-paced and visually impressive.

***(*)(*)Henry Fitzherbert, Sunday Express, 18/10/2015

This big-budget prequel to the Peter Pan story adds little to the legacy of JM Barrie’s classic.
