If you like bleak ‘n’ brutal thrillers like The French Connection, Se7en and Animal Kingdom (who doesn’t?), this is the movie for you.
What might have been a smart suspense thriller is overloaded with heavy-duty action, and has a ridiculous turn from Kate Winslet as a Russian mobster.
On television, The Shield and The Wire have covered similar territory in much more effective fashion.
All the surface razzle-dazzle can’t quite conceal the lack of heart and soul underneath.
There is a lot to like: a great opening, searing action and strong cast (Winslet is a stand out). Yet it has a familiar feel, runs out of steam and ultimately doesn’t match up to the sum of its parts.
Gives the heist movie a new lease of life.
Star turns from Kate Winslet, Woody Harrelson and Chiwetel Ejiofor can’t raise this crime caper above average.
