Though you may exit The Other Side of the Door questioning the rules of the ritual, whilst you’re in the midst of its dark embrace it’s reliably creepy.
This supernatural tale about a grieving mother mixes high-tension moments with patient characterisation to form a clever, capable chiller.
As a psychological study of a grief-stricken mother, the film works well enough. When it turns into a tale of demonic possession, it begins to creak. It doesn't help that the evil spirits summoned by Maria from the land of the dead look like crusty old hippies on leave from a music festival.
A solid haunting-possession movie with good character work and unusual local colour, this works in a few surprises, sufficient scares and a nicely barbed punchline.
Horror-by-numbers tale about grieving parents who unwittingly unleash the undead and wish they hadn’t.
