The critical consensus

'Are you sure about this?', one character asks as daylight fades and they cross the point of what could well be no return. Horror fans entering the cinema with trepidation may ask themselves the same question but, unlike the unhappy campers in this admirable sequel, it's recommended you go right ahead.

Director Adam Wingard reboots the long-dormant scary movie franchise with style and scares.

***(*)(*)James Mottram, The List, 12/09/2016

Effectively scary and occasionally inventive, Blair Witch is a solid genre film both helped and hindered by its franchise’s place in cinematic history.

***(*)(*)Jonathan Pile, Empire Online, 13/09/2016

Wingard and Barrett’s surprise – and surprisingly strong – sequel earns its scares. An effective follow-up to a film that can’t be matched.

****(*)Matt Glasby, Total Film, 11/09/2016

It does feel more like a remix than an innovative follow-up.

***(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 15/09/2016

The viewer is assaulted by random loud noises and something nasty lurking in the dark.

**(*)(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 16/09/2016

The 1999 original terrified audiences with its ‘found footage’ shtick, but there are few surprises left down in the woods today.
