Willem Dafoe and Nicolas Cage star in Paul Schrader’s lively but amoral crime drama.
There are some misjudgements along the way and it's a film that's definitely a little rough around the edges but it reveals Schrader as an old dog who still knows a trick or two.
Instantly forgettable, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
This is cartoonish, guerrilla-style filmmaking, clearly made on a very low budget: crude, tasteless, and grotesque but full of energy and bantering humour.
It’s all deeply unpleasant to watch.
Weird but also pretty entertaining in places.
Hackneyed and somewhat dated Tarantino-isms abound. But for the committed fan of such things, there is more than enough to enjoy here: not least an entertainingly unhinged performance from Willem Defoe.
