Robert Zemeckis lacks his usual fizz in this tourist visit to a heritage-wartime past, in which Pitt and Cotillard look and act like strangers.
Grinds along pleasantly enough.
A handsome film, then, that never really comes to life.
Robert Zemeckis' latest struggles between balancing glamorous exoticism and tense suspicion in this weakly plotted spy thriller.
Zemeckis’ old-school romance has its moments and Cotillard gives it her all, but it lacks the zip and chemistry to truly spark.
Ravishing without being riveting, this is polished period entertainment in the traditional matinee sense. But Casablanca it ain’t.
Alas, the only thing it leaves you pondering is whether Pitt and Cotillard regret climbing on board such a ludicrous star vehicle. Maybe they will. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon…
At its best Allied creates the tension you would find in a classic Hitchcock thriller such as Notorious. But when you see Pitt’s character reading Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock you suspect Greene might have made something tighter and tenser from the situation. Allied is undeniably entertaining but you don’t believe a word of it.
Marion Cotillard and Brad Pitt are an unconvincing couple in this plodding second world war thriller.
