Prevenge (15)

Prevenge (15)

Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

Widow Ruth is seven months pregnant when, believing herself to be guided by her unborn baby, she embarks on a homicidal rampage, dispatching anyone who stands in her way.

The critical consensus

Alice Lowe’s directorial debut may falter in its grip, especially in story and tone, but it’s a daringly evocative film that marks a filmmaker of imagination and promise.

***(*)(*)Ian Freer, Empire Online, 07/02/2017

Tightly-plotted and written and filmed in a manic burst of creative energy, Prevenge is a punchy, satisfying debut from a wonderfully adept comedy writer and performer who is also steeped in the history and the cinematic language of horror.

****(*)Kevin Wight, TVBomb, 07/02/2017

It is very morbid fare, but Lowe combines the Dario Argento-like bloodletting with a very British, very deadpan wit.

***(*)(*)Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 08/02/2017

Hells yes. A genuinely grotesque and original idea that never panders to genre expectation.

****(*)David Jenkins, Little White Lies, 08/02/2017

The execution is a little amateurish, but it’s watchable enough.

***(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 09/02/2017

The film’s sullenly monomaniac quality is entirely appropriate for the subject matter. Audiences may heartlessly laugh their heads off or remain in shocked silence. Both responses are fair enough.

****(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 09/02/2017

A quirky, offbeat film steeped in blood and gore and probably not for all tastes.

***(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 10/02/2017

Pregnancy is a bloody business as writer-director Alice Lowe stars as an expectant mother urged into a killing spree by her unborn baby.
