The story revolves around Nishimiya Shoko, a grade school student who has impaired hearing. She transfers into a new school, where she is bullied by her classmates, especially Ishida Shouya. It gets to the point where she transfers to another school and as a result, Shouya is ostracized and bullied himself, with no friends to speak to and no plans for the future. Years later, he sets himself on a path to redemption.
Tender and truthful anime reflecting on the ripple effects of bullying, from director Naoko Yamada.
A Silent Voice is long and meandering by animation standards but touching in the way it addresses big issues.
Based on a manga series, this delicately told story of wrongdoing, redemption and romance is subtle and sensuous.
Naoko Yamada’s animation about a young man seeking forgiveness from the victim of his childhood bullying, is a real tear jerker.
