Secret Scripture, The (12A)

A woman keeps a diary of her extended stay at a mental hospital.

The critical consensus

Vanessa Redgrave is brilliant as a woman instutionalised for infanticide, but otherwise Jim Sheridan’s tearjerker is a merely an endurance test.

**(*)(*)(*)Wendy Ide, The Observer, 14/05/2017

This adaptation of Sebastian Barry's novel from Jim Sheridan trades complexity for sentimentality.

***(*)(*)Allan Hunter, The List, 15/05/2017

A maudlin adaptation hampered by low energy and lapses of logic, The Secret Scripture does a disservice to the book it is based on, and the Irish history it plunders.

**(*)(*)(*)John Nugent, Empire Online, 15/05/2017

Melodramas don’t come more overwrought than Jim Sheridan’s version of Sebastian Barry’s Booker prize winning novel.
