A Man Called Ove has a humble, unassuming quality, epitomised by its performances, with Lassgård and Engvoll particularly good.
A Scrooge-like character spends his life railing against his neighbours – and trying to kill himself – in a drama that’s not funny, or sad or interesting.
Holm’s well-judged adaptation of the bestseller keeps the maudlin to a minimum and plays the black comedy just right. A strong contender for feel-good film of the year.
Without the humour, the film might have seemed very bleak indeed but Holm is always ready to undercut the grimmest scenes with some uplifting comic schtick.
A succession of flashbacks reveal much more of his life and paint a richer picture of his true personality in a lovely charmer of a film.
A comedy which aims squarely to haul in the “silver dollar”.
A moving and funny tale of a suicidal Swedish mechanic being helped by his pregnant Persian neighbour.
