Hitman's Bodyguard, The (15)

Action, Comedy

The world's top bodyguard gets a new client, a hit man who must testify at the International Court of Justice. They must put their differences aside and work together to make it to the trial on time.

The critical consensus

The leads work hard and there’s an attempt to add fun via cheesy music and Salma Hayek, but hackneyed dynamics, half-baked action sequences and saying “motherfucker” does not a Shane Black make.

Two characters, who you won’t like, insulting each other for two hours. Give it a miss and rewatch Midnight Run instead.

**(*)(*)(*)Neil Smith, Total Film, 15/08/2017

This is very, very, very silly. (in a pretty okay way).

David Jenkins, Little White Lies, 15/08/2017

Best viewed as a throwback to old-fashioned buddy flicks, The Hitman's Bodyguard is never less than watchable, but let down by a dearth of imagination.

**(*)(*)(*)Matthew Turner, The List, 15/08/2017

It’s a mystery why actors of the calibre of Jackson, Reynolds and Oldman wanted to appear in such low grade exploitation fare it but at least they give the impression of enjoying themselves.

**(*)(*)(*)Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 16/08/2017

Only belatedly, with its medium-octane chases around Amsterdam, does this dopey endeavour become the freewheeling romp the trailers promised. For an action-comedy, its timing is lousy.

**(*)(*)(*)Mike McCahill, The Guardian, 17/08/2017

Definitely not my idea of fun.

*(*)(*)(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 18/08/2017

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson buddy up but phone it in.
