A story we’ve seen told a hundred times before feels fresh thanks to Danielle Macdonald’s brilliant performance, handling both the drama and the rapping in style.
Patti Cake$ generates more than enough goodwill with its depiction of endearing misfits to earn its shamelessly euphoric conclusion.
A beautiful story that plays out like a Bruce Springsteen song.
Patti’s talent is so obvious to us as viewers that it is only a matter of time until everyone else in the film will notice it too. The suffering here is only ever skin deep. However, that doesn’t lessen the magic at all when she begins to rap.
Despite appearances this is an old-fashioned Cinderella story – with touches of Baz Luhrmann – about an alienated aspiring rapper in New Jersey.
Rough and ready at the start but blossoms into a life-affirming charmer.
Danielle Macdonald stars as an unlikely rapper in a feelgood film with attitude whose characters all convince.
