In the Last Days of the City

Drama

A documentary filmmaker in Cairo is having difficulty finishing his film, so his friends send him footage from the cities they live in: Baghdad, Beirut, and Berlin.

The critical consensus

The film is already a period piece. Former dictator Mubarak is now long gone. The knowledge of the upheavals that Egypt has experienced in the intervening years only adds to the poignancy here. Things have gotten worse, not better.

Allow the gorgeous images to resonate and unlock this film’s slow-release pleasures.

Isobel Raphael, Little White Lies, 21/09/2017

It’s a melancholy, interesting film, slightly opaque, a cine-journal about the way youth is clouded by experience.
