Florida Project, The (15)

Drama

Set over one summer, the film follows precocious 6-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Disney World.

The critical consensus

Vibrant and brimming with vitality, this is empathic towards its subjects but fiercely critical of the system that victimises them. The performances of Vinaite, Dafoe and Prince will stay with you.

*****Helen O'Hara, Empire Online, 07/11/2017

Don’t believe the hype, as this is probably even better than the hype suggests.

*****David Jenkins, Little White Lies, 08/11/2017

Like a US version of Lynne Ramsay’s Ratcatcher, this is a film fully attuned to the way kids find beauty all around them and Baker does remarkable work with his young cast.

****(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 08/11/2017

The Florida Project is one of the best films about childhood made anywhere in recent years.

*****Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 09/11/2017

A young cast give brilliantly naturalistic performances in this glorious story about a bunch of deprived kids living near Walt Disney World.

*****Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 09/11/2017

The Florida Project may sound grim but it is anything but.

*****Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 10/11/2017

A child’s sense of wonder is at the heart of Sean Baker’s joyful story of people living on the impoverished fringes of Florida’s tourist traps.

*****Mark Kermode, The Observer, 12/11/2017
