A boxing drama with a difference, Journeyman packs a powerful punch — and reminds us not to take Paddy Considine for granted.
Journeyman is a well-crafted and intelligent drama. For all its clever footwork, though, it stumbles when it tries to find a rousing and upbeat ending from subject matter that is innately so grim.
The great performances don’t quite make up for the functional storyline.
A well-crafted tear jerker, it knows that sporting life metaphors are part of the deal and is OK with that.
The film is a little self-serious, and the story’s recovery arc wraps up too tidily, but as a character study – and showcase for Considine and Whittaker’s considerable gifts as actors – it’s surprisingly interesting and angular.
