A period drama in which an author visits a Channel Island book club, established during the German occupation.
A well told, beautifully acted drama that offers nothing new but a comforting level of familiarity and cosiness. The sort of film you leave saying, “Well, wasn’t that nice,” and then don’t give another thought.
It's beguiling and affecting, with warmth and good humour as it celebrates friendship, courage, devotion and the joys of reading too.
This is a jaunty and good-natured affair, buoyed by a very likeable performance from Lily James.
Escapist fun is great, but this is icky and naive.
Terribly twee.
Lovers of big soppy, old-fashioned romances need look no further.
The acting style is in large print; the plodding storytelling relies on large chunks of exposition.
