12th Man, The (15)

War, Thriller

Norwegian historical thriller, set during World War II, in which the last surviving member of a band of Resistance fighters must escape to Sweden whilst evading capture from the Nazis.

The critical consensus

It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but certainly for war film aficionados, The 12th Man is well worth the time seeking out, and in years to come, could well become regarded as a classic.

Baalsrud never claimed to be a hero and the emphasis of this gripping reconstruction rightly falls on the resourcefulness, courage and self-sacrifice of those who epitomised the spirit of resistance.

Old-fashioned, ultimately rousing Norwegian wartime drama from Harald Zwart.

A war film that wears superior influences on its sleeve. On the flipside, it brings us the best reindeer-chase scene ever committed to film.
