Captain Marvel (12A)

Science Fiction, Fantasy, Action

A sci-fi fantasy adventure in which a pilot becomes embroiled in an alien war.

The critical consensus

As a Nick Fury buddy comedy, it’s fun. As a feminist fable it’s essential. This takes a while to really get going, but when Carol Danvers takes off she is unstoppable.

Feels a little Girl Power, but Mendelsohn is a delight.

Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies, 05/03/2019

Brie Larson makes an engaging and witty superhero in new MCU film.

Marvel’s superhero adventure veers from boomingly serious to quirkily droll as Larson wages a vicious war against evil aliens.

***(*)(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 05/03/2019

Brie Larson is a cool customer in the first female-led feature from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

****(*)Emma Simmonds, The List, 05/03/2019

A satisfying standalone launch for Marvel’s latest superhero combines sci-fi action with ’90s nostalgia. Overcoming minor stumbles, it ultimately soars.

****(*)Matt Maytum, Total Film, 05/03/2019

The Room Oscar-winner quickly comes into her own in a role that, despite the limitations of the franchise, never quite conforms to superhero conventions.

***(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 06/03/2019

Captain Marvel veers from confusing space opera, to fun buddy movie, back to boring Marvel action extravaganza, but Brie Larson's wise-cracking and a killer 90s soundtrack keep this latest MCU film watchable.

***(*)(*)Jamie Dunn, The Skinny, 08/03/2019

Larson makes a lovable superhero, but this is thoroughly middling Marvel.
