A mystery crime thriller in which a detective investigates the death of an astrophysicist.
Carol Morley’s best intentions can’t propel a confusing subversion of the noir whodunit into the atmosphere. Out Of Blue reaches for the stars, but only digs itself further into the ground.
A twisted car wreckage, but without the element of voyeuristic fascination.
There’s a black hole where the hardboiled plot should be.
Like all of Morley’s films, Out of Blue has some ragged edges that may alienate unsympathetic viewers. But having now seen the film three times, I find myself loving it all the more for its imperfections. When a film-maker aims this high, how can one do anything but watch in wonder?
