More of the same for a good-enough kids’ film series. But Bostick’s vim and vigour help, and the balance of message with entertainment is less clumsy than you’d fear.
Wimpy Kid 2 may make children happy even if it lacks anything resembling storytelling inspiration apart from an odd scene where Greg runs through a nursing home in his underwear.
If you’re looking for a movie for the younger members of the family then Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules will be right up your street.
What follows is a sweet little film that not only understands and exploits in amusing fashion the frequently cruel dynamics of sibling relationships (Bostick is especially good at nailing that irrational malice that older brothers sometimes have), but it also knows how to impart lessons about the value of family without getting all sappy about it.
A release aimed at the half-term crowd, but accompanying adults will find plenty to enjoy, too.
U-certificate fun.
