Everywhere you looked in this Tramway encounter with Rainer and her work, you saw a feisty intellect scratching away at surface complacencies, not just in art and aesthetics but in gender politics, racial prejudices and social structures.
The Tramway audience rose to give her a rare standing ovation, not only for the length and richness of her career, but for the magnificent late flowering that makes it still a work in progress.
