What can we say about Pass the Spoon?
Well…There’s no denying the gorgeous, poster-paint-coloured skill and style of Nicholas Bone’s fine production; or the pure pleasure and exhilaration on the faces of the audience, as they pour out into a wet Glasgow night.
Sandwiched between the knife-sharp wit and biting satire lies a scathing examination of modern culture which parodies the scale of escalation seen in the modern world.
Shrigley’s TV cooking show-based yarn is an irresistibly irreverent riot of surreally-grotesque humour and avant-garde music that waves a refreshing two fingers at serious theatrical conventions even as it takes them to the max.
Occasionally , PTS’ humour just doesn’t seem as scabrous as the best of Shrigley’s animated work – a tad too gentle, maybe? Mostly, though, it works, an undeniably fun, hi-octane show bursting with ideas and genius puppetry.
A work of unbridled genius.
