Mary Cossette Productions in association with UK Arts International's dynamic production marks the centenary of Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (1912-1967) and features four multi-talented actor-musicians – playing guitars, fiddles, banjo, mandolin, dobro, autoharp, dulcimer, jaw harp and spoons – who bring to life both Guthrie’s own colourful, arduous story and the rich cast of characters who shared in it. Featuring around 30 classic Guthrie songs the show pays fittingly heartfelt, uncontrived and freshly topical tribute to a towering folk icon.
With a lot of Woody's inspiration coming from the Great Depression, it's surprising how uplifting an evening it really was, thanks to the passion and talent on stage. An opening night standing ovation and – almost – a Celtic Connections sell-out means if you haven't got a ticket already, you're going to miss out.
If there is a better band around to honour Woody, I would like to hear them, but to be honest these guys are doing the job just fine.
Every member of the cast...is a terrific musician and singer, soaring briskly and beautifully through song after song, on guitar and banjo, harmonica and double bass, fiddle and zither; and placing the music right at centre stage.
