This is a big day for Sadie and Bill; their favourite person is coming to visit. They’ve gone to great lengths to prepare for the occasion. Read more …
It’s an even bigger day for Jackie; and not one she’d anticipated. Should she make the most of it? She doesn’t know if she can any more; too many people depend on her.
Any Given Day is a searing, poetic and hard-hitting new play from one of Scotland’s leading playwrights. It explores our fear of the unknown and our guilt and responsibility towards ourselves and others.
Linda McLean’s plays for the Traverse include strangers, babies, Shimmer, Olga (from the original Finnish play by Laura Ruohonen)and One Good Beating. Other theatre includes Happy Yet?, Word for Word, The Last Mission, Riddance, The Price of a Good Dinner and Like Water for Chocolate.
Linda McLean has conjured a chilling exploration of our fear of the unknown.
Emotionally rewarding and intellectually challenging.
A shock conclusion after a fleeting moment of joy
Although it would be difficult to recommend And Given Day as an evening's entertainment, or even as a gripping piece of drama, I can guarantee that those who see it will never forget the faces, the lives, or the stories of the four characters McLean has created.
Actor Kate Dickie shows a hard exterior and writer Linda McLean another mould-breaking dramatic structure in this bold play.
As a psychological horror, this is an excellent play which truly does horrify on so many levels.
The heavy-handed attempt at dramatic irony in the flimsy connection between the playlets brought a maudlin resonance to this unconvincing encounter.
There may be nothing startlingly new here. But it is undoubtedly well done.
