One Academy Productions are proud to present the Scottish premiere of the controversial Multi Tony Award-Winning celebration of awakening sexuality.
“SPRING AWAKENING KNOCKS OUT A GREAT ROSTER OF INDIE ROCK SONGS AGAINST THE ESSENTIAL NARRATIVE POIGNANCY OF FRANK WEDEKIND’S 1891 GERMAN EXPRESSIONIST PLAY ABOUT ADOLESCENT SEXUAL FEVER AND FRIENDSHIP.” Independent (West End Production, 2009)
“THE SHOW SEEMS TO ACHE WITH LOVE AND THROB WITH LUST” Telegraph (West End Production, 2009)
Spring Awakening is the contemporary indie musical inspired by Frank Wedekind’s 1891 masterpiece of repressed emotion and adolescent passion. It is the explosive story of three friends – brilliant student Melchior, his tortured friend Moritz and Wendla, a beautiful young girl - who are all on a voyage of emotional awareness and sexual awakening.
The production was a huge cult hit on Broadway where it premiered and then in London’s West End where it opened in 2009.
I think it's pretty clear that this is going to be one of the hits of the Fringe
There is much gusto in the rendition of this show, but one fears that with the inevitable loss of emotional depth, the overall effect is closer to Britney Spears than Wedekind.
Only during the big numbers, when all the cast sing together, does this production actually begin to hit the right notes.
[They] do it much more than proud.
