Cinderella, Dundee Rep

‘Sometimes all you need is a little magic’ Read more …

Cinderella works all day for her father in a floating retirement home for elderly magicians and their assistants. And when she’s not bailing out the family business, she’s bailing out the water!

Back on dry land, the Queen announces that a ball will be held to find the dashingly handsome young prince a wife, but Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters are determined to ruin her dream of attending the Royal ball.

With only the retirement home’s magicians to help her, who will work the magic Cinderella needs to get to the ball?

Filled with zany comedy, hilarious songs and live music, this deliciously whacky version of the classic tale is magically brought to life as you may never have seen it before.

The critical consensus

James Brining's production is full of vigour, and, at the end, it comes ashore with a romantic union that is touching, deserved and no longer all at sea.

This Cinderella is the traditional story that we all know, but the telling of it is not.

Peter Cargill, The Stage, 05/12/2011

t’s all witty stuff, for us grown-ups. But is it fair to small kids, experiencing a theatrical Cinderella for the very first time? Of course not.

While the production lacks sufficient gaps for audience participation (you can feel the crowd itching to join in) there’s plenty to compensate in Porter’s witty script – pitched at slightly older children and young-at-heart adults – and the generally excellent performances.

Director James Brining (ably assisted by Neil Warmington's impressive-yet-utilitarian revolving set) can boast one of the most fantastically absurd Christmas shows ever to have been staged in Scotland.

Mark Brown, Sunday Herald, 16/12/2011

Is it mean to suggest that Porter's script tries to tick too many boxes of his own contrivance, or that his publicity-seeking Queen is an overly adult-orientated spoof? Luckily, as the plot loops the loop and the beguilingly quirky set revolves from split-level boat to gilded palace, the cast not only keep pace with the necessary changes of character, they serve up Porter's gallery of eccentrics and oddballs with hugely entertaining flair.

What a disappointment, it was a play not pantomime, the children must have been bored, there was no shapstick, no villan and nothing to keep then enthralled, such a shame as its usually a childs first visit to panto what incentive will they have to return and due to the lack of involvement for them there was a constant stream leaving to have comfort breaks. Hope it does not effect there audience for next years offering.
