Passing Through

Passing ThroughPhoto by Alan Guthrie

Passing Through is set on a wet winter's night. At the Dockers Social Club there's been a terrible mistake. They booked 'The Ace of Spades' thinking it was a Motorhead tribute band, but they got Tommy the Magician instead. Tommy made a sharp exit and is nursing a pint and a bruised ego in the pub down the road when Alice stomps in from the rain. What neither of them know is that some magic might just be round the corner. Or is true love just another conjuring trick, a sleight of hand?

A new romantic comedy by Alistair Rutherford (BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Scotland) performed in an intimate cabaret style in the Victorian Bar.

The critical consensus

A fun and entertaining evening out. Alistair Rutherford has a solid basis if he wants to work on the script for the future, but there’s no need to pour cold water on what is there, whether in the performances or the production as a whole.

For an undemanding 60 minutes that's sure to put a smile on the face of all but the hardest-hearted.

A mediocre production [that] falls far short of igniting that familiar February flame.

Some of the writing is bright, perky, observant, with an occasional shimmer of pure conjurors’ magic; elsewhere, it labours its point a bit.

For any rom-com to work, you have to believe that the characters deserve to be together. In this show, what they both need is a cup of tea and a sit down.
