Driving Manuel

Peter Manuel could see in the dark. That was the rumour that began among the children, after the two Harrys killed him. Read more …

True story: in 1958 two strangers met in a restaurant in West Regent Street. The older, fatter man was William Watt, accused of breaking into his own Burnside home and shooting his wife, sister in law and daughter in their beds and then sexually assaulting the corpses. Released after three months in Barlinnie for lack of evidence, Watt began to investigate himself. The other man was Peter Manuel, a career criminal. Manuel had contacted Watt. He was keen to meet him because, he said, he knew who the real murderer was. They were together for eleven hours. No one really knows what happened. The next time they met Manuel would be cross-examining Watt in the High Court. Manuel was on trial for the Watt murders and five others.
