High up in a Glasgow tower block, ten-year old Star and her mother await the outcome of their claim for asylum. As Mama’s mind fragments under the pressure of their unknown future, Star constructs a poetic and fantastical world of her own.
While it undeniably deals honestly with a very difficult subject, the overall feeling is not as bleak as it might be. We are reminded that there can be humour, imagination and tenderness in even the most difficult situations.
The recent adoption of the bedroom tax is just one reminder that while Star’s world may be half fantasy, the subject matter is not.
A production that hits harder than its modest premise portends.
In this fully-staged 75-minute version, the text seems to lack last year’s tight focus on Mama’s acute fear, and increasing detachment from reality.
