Aladdin, Glasgow King's Theatre

We’re delighted to announce that we are reuniting the cast from last year’s critically acclaimed panto Cinderella. The cast were such a huge hit and we have changed the title to Aladdin to better match their talents both as individuals and as a team. Read more …

One of Scotland’s finest comediennes and King’s panto favourite Karen Dunbar will play a new role, Slave of the Ring, Stand Up and Capital Scotland’s Des Clarke returns as the loveable yet loopy Wishee Washee, son to Widow Twankey played by Gordon Cooper who was last seen as an awfy Ugly Sister alongside panto stalwart Gavin Mitchell who this year will be pure dead evil Abanazar. Completing the cast we are thrilled to welcome back Steven McNicoll as a Palace Guard, Kieran Brown as Aladdin, Jenny Douglas as Princess Jasmine and John Ramage as The Emperor.

An audience favourite, Aladdin promises to build on last year’s production, widely hailed as the best for many years, with a new script, costumes and will contain all the magical ingredients which makes the King’s the only place to be this festive season.

The critical consensus

By the time the cast roars out its final roof-lifting version of Proud Mary – as strange and rousing a closing song as ever graced a panto – the flaws no longer matter, and the big communal celebration that is the Glasgow pantomime has triumphed again.

The production is tight, and rarely indulges in rambling routines: the chorus of dancers bring a lightning energy to their numbers.

Gareth K Vile, The Stage, 13/12/2013

This is everything a Christmas show should be, with plenty for both adults and kids alike: there’s sparkle and pizzazz, there’s music and dancing, sing-a-longs and slapstick and the highlights more than make up for the sometimes saggy plot. With Aladdin, the King’s upholds its long held position as the number one pantomime in Glasgow.

I was accompanied by an eight year old and he loved every minute, so I can guarantee that the kids will love it, as will adults, but if you want something different, you won’t find it here. Cinderella was perfect last year, but Aladdin shows that perfection cannot be improved upon.

It’s good of producers First Family Entertainment to allow a show to take place in between the ads. Is this growing commercialism to the detriment of a much-loved panto? Oh yes it is!

Mark Brown, Scottish Stage (Sunday Herald), 28/12/2013
